Manufacturing costs in Japan are quite high. Things that are made there are made there *because* of the very high brain power and sophistication of Japanese workers.
And anyway, Apple sells lots and lots of computers/iPhones/iPads etc. in Asia, so why on earth shouldn't those countries expect that if they can do a better job building them, then Apple should build them there?
How silly would it be for Apple to decide to just build things in the US and try to make the rest of the world pay higher prices to support American workers?
Actually, Japanese companies manufacturing products in Japan is extremely inefficient due to the high cost, and due primarily to protectionism and racial pride. The Japanese domestic market is known for being highly inefficient.
Note, I am not arguing Apple should assemble it's products in the US. Asia can do the same job for lower cost. My argument is simply there's no evidence American products are inherently of lower quality than other country's products.

As much as I enjoy Apple products and services, it's nice seeing someone beat them to the punch. This can only be a good thing for all of us.
I see cloud services as an exciting technology. I'm rockin a Macbook Air and the only files I keep on the 64 GB SSD are documents. All music, pictures, video and movies are on a 500 GB external HD. Obviously it requires little or no effort to plug said external HD into the Air but it would be nice to shed it. It would also be nice not having to sync music over to the iPhone.
I say bring it on!

Resolution independence will not stop images from getting bigger. Unless you are dealing with vector art, scaling an image up will decrease quality. Resolution independence will be a function of taking the biggest image that might be used and scaling it down.

Resolution Independence is a completely Vector based Drawing Model that post renders to bitmaps based upon the PPI of the screen and the resolution set by the operating system. Every object on the screen is a vector and when scaled up and down will lose no resolution. The buffers for rendering offloaded to the streams/cores of the GPU(GPUs) need to have enough performance to show it is seamless to the naked eye before it's released. That requires OpenGL 3.x/4.x across the entire System with OpenCL 1.1 optimized throughout the OS.

Yeah, that was prior to the invites sent out. Jobs from experience will be pitching the movie store hard..meaning the laptop updates have to take a back seat for now. I mean they announced a 24" iMac quietly just to give you an idea of how important this is to them. Laptop updates? i wouldnt count on it...at least for now
Agree with you! Also, people tend to forget that Apple split into two divisions - one media and one computers (not the official titles, but that's basically how it works). Anyone who has worked in a large company knows that those two divisions will not cooperate because that's what always happens. Expect only iPod related stuff this week because it's the iPod group's big event. Why would they give the glory away to the other guys? :rolleyes:

All very nice and I'm fully supportive of more high resolution graphics as soon as possible. It's a shame they don't believe in supporting the millions of Blu-ray discs being sold though, and trying to convince people that 720p iTunes content is good enough for TVs that are bigger than any of the displays they've ever sold, whilst planning for smaller but higher resolution screens that they must apparently believe makes a difference.
I know, the old 720p is good enough marketing speak does make you laugh really.
I have wondered, when they finally decide they can supply 1080p downloads from iTunes and they come up with a new marketing line to support this change, perhaps in another year or 3. Will they offer free downloads of the 1080p versions to those customers who have bought 720p versions of the films?
Surely they won't expect people to pay a second time, as often they are paying as much for the iTunes version as the bluray physical disk 1080p version.

Can I just say I am amazed at some of the responses on this thread. Typical American and often I must admit British protectionism coming straight out like a bad smell. Without these so called "3rd world" workers Apple would be a lowly player. Firstly Japan is not "3rd world". It is one of the most developed countries in the world, and has some of the most adept and intelligent people on this planet. Secondly, the term "3rd world" and "1st world" is offensive. The proper term is developing and developed world. Thirdly, I am sure that we will all be fine if we dont get a few iPod batteries or glue. People have died over there and continue to die because of this tragedy. This is surely more important than a load of old microchips. Sorry. Rant over.

I�m interested in what Apple will do with the 15� MBP. If Apple doubled the resolution of the 1440x900 display, then going from a 1680x1050 MBP to this new 2880x1800 MBP means an increase in DPI but a decrease in viewable information.

I voted positive.. It's only good for us that there are multiple modern, solid, successful handheld OS around. I hope Win Mobile gets some share too.
Quite funny seeing Symbian dying by the side of the road too, I've never liked it much despite loving some of Nokia's hardware choices.
I prefer my Apple-land devices but I can see why some people don't. :) Bring on the competition. I like Apple's slow but steady and generally well implemented feature roll-outs too.. Agree about the notification system though, it needs replacing.

What are the odds that Apple Stores will offer to upgrade the Yonah processors in the MacBooks, iMacs, and Minis to the Merom chips (for a fee, of course)?

(1) How will users on other than FAST cable modems get Loin?
(2) How can we make emergency backups? I've been in a number of places were downloading gigabytes of data was not a viable option.

Pretty confident (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=11923858&postcount=88) there won't be an iPhone 5 this summer. The CDMA phone was just launched. It really doesn't make sense to stagger the releases (CDMA in winter, GSM in summer); it makes much more sense to unify the devices. We don't want fragmentation, do we? But no way in hell it's going to happen four months after the CDMA launch. This makes as much sense as launching an iPad 3 in the so-called "year of iPad 2". :rolleyes:

Application Launcher is horrendous. Moving an app each icon at a time, and restarting after command+alt+control deleting applications brings them back. If you could command+click on more than one app to arrange them, that's an improvement. Beyond that, it's an implementation that makes more sense on a multi-touch iOS device than a desktop OS. FAIL
Mission Control - I agree, an improvement. A bit buggy, but it is convenient to see Expos�/Spaces/Desktops unified (although I loathe the 2-dimensial/linear "Spaces" implementation, "Snow Leopard" had it right. An iOS Springboard "Spaces" on a desktop system is counterintuitive Mr Jobs, especially for those who use spaces on a projector for demonstrating different desktops quickly in lectures, presentations, etc.This is beta/unfinished software. What the hell do you expect?
As for the rest, applications such as "MacPilot" already have the ability to utilize those functions (and ad-hoc AirDrop is interesting but unless you are with another nearby Lion system and both are present to "accept" a transfer, it seems rather meh).'MacPilot' is a mess of multiple functions that do not replicate native API's that are always enabled for use. Wow you have to click accept? Good. Why would you want the possibility of a bunch of random garbage sent to you without your consent?
The lack of color in the system icons is god awful. Color graphics are much more easily identified than a scaled down grey icon.
